Business Premises Extension Construction underway at Rock Fall UK Ltd

Second generation family owned Safety Boot manufacturer, Rock Fall operates from one secure site based on Wimsey Way in Alfreton, Derbyshire and successfully applied for planning permission for an extension of their “Unit 4” with construction now underway. Completion is expected in April 2020 and they will have an additional 5000sq. feet of warehousing space, as they continually ramp up stock due to a sustained demand for their range on a variety of national contracts.

It will allow them to hold an additional 200 pallet spaces, totalling more than 20,000 pairs. It takes their total premises size to 55,000sq. feet.

However due to rapid expansion of the business, the senior management team are still looking for opportunities to acquire a much larger, purpose-built unit in the coming years.

Celebrating The Ingenuity of the Tooling Industry... TMB Innovation Award

The TMB Innovation Award was created back in 2013 to recognise and celebrate cutting edge technological advances and excellence within the tooling industry.  Seven years on and this now coveted prize attracts nominations from brands that are both household names and from lesser known, smaller and specialist, manufacturers.  These compete against each other, at the TroyTHS annual show at Silverstone, and are judged not on the type of product but on the innovative technology behind it.

As this is a TMB award, it is open exclusively to Troy Suppliers.
In order to enter the product must;

  • have been released no earlier than the last quarter of the previous year
  • have unique selling features.

A vast array of products has been entered over the years, including power tools, abrasives, PPE and more.  Each nominated supplier gives a short presentation at TMB to a diverse panel of judges, with expertise in the tooling sector.  The winner is then deliberated and announced later that evening at the TMB after-show gala dinner.

Troy is keen to drive technological advancement, research and design, so is adding more value and recognition to this already beneficial accolade.  This year, as well as receiving the award itself and being recognised within the group, we are providing the winning product with an enhanced promotional campaign.  This will include a Troy designed advertorial, to appear within an up-and-coming issue of a well known industry magazine, a prominent banner feature that will run all year ‘round on the Troy website and a full press release created by TroyTHS, to be sent to other tooling industry related media outlets. And more…

If you’re interested in attending
the TMB Innovation Award presentations at TMB on Thursday 19th
March, ‘20, please visit the TroyTHS Presentation Area, in Hall Suzuka at 2pm.

Chicago Pneumatic Tools UK Still helping to bring the past to the future!

Palaeontologist Jamie Jordan along with enthusiast and Museum Manager Sarah Moore decided to show their amazing discovery of ‘Indie’ The Iguanodon’ at an Open day in Cranleigh Village Hall in Surrey. The reason being that this was within three miles of the quarry where they discovered INDIE.

The timing coincided with the summer holidays so that the local community could see for themselves what was discovered and see the many exhibits laid out for them. Part of the actual skeleton of INDIE (still encased in its clay block) was set up behind a purpose-built portable safety screen.  This portable prep area was equipped with Jamie’s preferred air tool the CP9361 Air Scribe.

Visitors saw the specially trained volunteers using the tool (supplied by sponsors Chicago Pneumatic) removing more of the skeleton from the clay, replicating the procedure that they carry out at the laboratory in Cambridgshire. The tool was used constantly throughout the long day and did not disappoint as this part of the skeleton began to be visible for visitors.

On display behind the prep area was a near life size banner (5M x 2M) with an image of an Iguanodon skeleton and a full-size model interpretation of a full-size head printed in 3d plastic. Many of the children enjoyed taking their selfies by these displays and it really became clear how large the discovery really is.

Facts about the find:

  • Iguanodon means Iguana Tooth
  • The genus was named in 1825 by Gideon Mantell
  • 132 million years old
  • 10 meters long
  • 4 Tons weight
  • Identified by its famous ‘thumb spike’ and odd number of teeth
  • Upper Jaw: 58 teeth
  • Lower Jaw: 50 teeth

Local interest exceeded Fossils Galore ‘s expectations, indeed some 773 visitors passed through the exhibition, including some local councilors and the Mayor herself.  Jamie Jordan says that ‘the day truly enforced our belief that people are interested in the wonder of what lies beneath our feet awaiting discovery’

Costa Coffee Chooses Bott For New State-of-the-art Facility

After 40 years of roasting coffee beans in South London’s Lambeth, Costa (after an investment of £38m) recently moved into their state-of-the-art Roastery in Basildon, Essex. Covering over 85,000 SQ feet, the new facility is the largest in Europe – the equivalent of over 30 tennis courts.

The site has more than quadrupled Costa’s roasting capacity from 11,000 tonnes of coffee per year to 45,000 tonnes, enabling them to meet customer demand in the long-term and support the company’s rapid national and international growth.

With exacting standards when it comes to delivering the perfect cup of coffee, it was only natural that Costa chose a company like Bott to provide them with workshop storage equipment for their Maintenance workshop. Both companies are in the business of producing high-quality products, using sustainable and recyclable products and equipment. Costa’s new Roastery has been given the BREEAM ‘outstanding’ level award. The first production building to gain this level, by using sustainable build materials, rainwater harvesting, photovoltaic and water heating panels, LED lighting etc. Bott’s own policies such as energy saving and rainwater recycling, enable the company to minimise its own environmental impact.

Marc Congdon, Engineering Manager at Costa, said: “The passion and precision that goes into every cup of Costa coffee, filters through to the role of our maintenance engineers. They need to be able to work efficiently and safely, which is why Bott was the best choice for us.”

Marc contacted Bott to discuss Costa’s requirements and arranged for Paul Maynard, Project Sales Manager, to visit the roastery. Paul said: “The new workshop was a blank canvas, with specifications needed for 3 dedicated maintenance areas; Mechanical/Metalwork, Pneumatic/Wet and Electrical/Electronic. Each area required a different solution for specific maintenance tasks, and to include efficient storage for tools and equipment.”

Paul provided detailed 3D drawings of the workshop, based on Bott’s heavy-duty cubio range. The design consisted of large and wall storage cupboards, drawer cabinets, maintenance trolleys and perfo back panels for easy access tool & component storage. Solid Beech worktops were recommended for the Pneumatic/Wet area, accommodating a sink at one end and diagnostic testing at the other. Lino worktop in the Mechanical/Metalwork area provides the perfect working surface for heavier work such as grinding and drilling. Custom details such as a hose reel cabinet and letterbox bins were also added, and all the products were finished in a durable powder-coat in Costa’s signature colours.

Marc Congdon said: “Our investment into the new roastery in Basildon demanded choosing equipment of the highest quality, enabling us to continue producing the best products and grow as a global business. We have full confidence in the quality and longevity of Bott’s products and the service provided was first-class.”

Costa’s new roastery is expected to be in operation for the next 20+ years, demonstrating their confidence in service durability and growth. This reflects Bott’s own ‘Built to Last’ approach, a guarantee of quality products that stand the test of time.

Dickies Unveils Latest Safety Boot

Global workwear brand Dickies has expanded its range of safety footwear with the launch of the Medford Boot – designed to offer superior comfort, durability and protection in the colder months.

Ideal for tradespeople who spend all day on their feet, the Medford features a waterproof leather upper, plus thermal insulation to keep their feet warm and dry in cold and wet weather conditions.

Meeting the S3 safety classification, the Medford benefits from Dickies’ innovative DTC outsole, which was designed by its footwear experts to achieve the highest grip performance on smoother surfaces. The DTC sole has ergonomic flex lines and geometric tread patterns for maximum ground contact, even in wet conditions.

The Medford style is anti-static and is fuel and oil resistant. Additional safety features include composite toe-caps, which are lighter than steel alternatives while providing the same level of protection.

“With the Autumn/Winter season approaching, this is likely to prove popular among those looking for a new boot that offers both warmth and breathability, while ensuring they have the protection and durability they rely on,” said James Whitaker, Marketing Director.

“Footwear is a big focus of innovation for us and we’re constantly looking for ways to update and expand our range. As with all our footwear styles, the Medford has been tested above and beyond the safety regulation to ensure the protection and comfort of the tradespeople who rely on them.”

Designed in the style of a hiker boot, the Medford is available in three colour-ways, including Black, Brown and Navy Blue.

Draper Tools Advent Calendar Raises £7k in Aid of 'Tools for Self Reliance'

Family run tool firm, Draper Tools, launched its 2021 tool advent calendar earlier this year, featuring 24 doors of tools to open in the countdown to Christmas. With Christmas being the season of goodwill, the company pledged to donate £1 from the sale of every calendar to the charity Tools for Self Reliance. The calendar has been so popular that it raised £7,000, which was recently presented to the charity alongside an additional donation of £500, made in lieu of sending Christmas cards this year.

Draper Tools has a long-standing relationship with its charity partner Tools for Self Reliance. The charity collects and refurbishes hand tools and sewing machines for training projects in Africa, enabling people to learn a trade and earn a sustainable income. Since becoming an official charity partner earlier this year, Draper Tools has been giving its support with fundraisers and tool donations.

Fran Weeks, PR Manager at Draper Tools commented: “Recent times have been tough for so many organisations but especially charities, who’ve faced numerous challenges throughout the pandemic. When the time came to launch our 2021 advent calendar, we all felt it made sense to donate some of the proceeds to our charity partner Tools for Self Reliance, in recognition of the incredible, life-changing work they do. It seems our customers felt the same way – the calendar was snapped up in record time. We’ve been so happy to see the reaction to it and how it’s been helping people countdown to Christmas. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who bought one this year.”

Lauren Smits, Fundraising & Events Officer at Tools for Self Reliance, commented:

“Tools For Self Reliance couldn’t be happier with the success of the fantastic Drapers Tools advent calendar and would like to say a big thank you on behalf of all the team here in the UK and everyone we work with overseas. The continued support from Draper Tools enables people in Africa to earn an income and support their families and communities – we can’t wait to see what we can do next as a charity partnership.”

The Draper Tools Advent Calendar 2021 received widespread media attention and was named one of the best in the national press. It even made its TV debut this year when it was featured on Steph’s Packed Lunch on Channel 4. The 24 doors of the calendar open to reveal specially selected tools that make up a 54-piece tool kit. Draper Tools has completely sold out of advent calendars, though any tool lovers keen to get their hands on one may still find a limited number available from local retailers and online sellers.

The team at Draper Tools send a huge thanks to the Troy members who bought calendars!

Draper Tools message, we remain fully operational

A statement from Graham Wade, Managing Director of Draper Tools.

I wanted to update you on how we’re adapting to the uncertainty of COVID-19.

As a family business, we’ve always taken seriously the health of our staff and customers. In these turbulent times, this has never been more important, and we are striving to do everything we can to protect us all.

Now, as ever, the entire Draper Tools team are working tirelessly to adapt to these ever-changing situations and make sure that we keep it business as usual.

We understand the challenges faced by our customers, so please be assured that we remain fully operational.

We have lots of stock available to supply all customers. We have a warehouse team that are ready and raring to go to pick, pack and deliver our tools. And most importantly, we wanted to do something to support you during these difficult times, so in the next few days we’re reducing our drop shipping fee from £6.50 to £4.95 (we’re just in the process of making the necessary adjustments to our systems to achieve this). In these times, more and more people are working at home and so this change will hopefully enable you to attract extra business with our carriers delivering directly to your customers.

Our carriage paid order values remain unchanged.

From the Draper family and I, we want to say a huge thanks to you, for your ongoing support. We are doing everything we can to ensure that we help you, your customers and our team through these unprecedented times.

We will continue to review our measures as the situation unfolds.

Thank you and stay safe.

Draper Tools study finds more than ‭430 million DIY jobs needing attention in Britain’s homes‬‬‬‬‬‬

More than 430 million DIY jobs currently need attention in Britain’s homes, a new study by leading tool firm Draper Tools has found.

The Draper Tools ‘Job Done’ study looked at the nation’s attitudes to some of life’s essential but often put off jobs. From everyday home, garden and car maintenance, right through to DIY and household repairs, the research polled 2,000 adults with the aim of exploring how Britain gets the job done.

Lack of time and hectic lifestyles are partly to blame for the weighty list of home improvements on the nation’s to do lists.

Giving their houses a lick of paint, putting up shelves and wallpapering are among the tasks they are yet to finish.

Other nagging jobs include inflating car tyres, changing light bulbs, fixing dodgy toilet flushes and cleaning the patio.

The Draper Tools research found three quarters agree if a job’s worth doing it’s worth doing well – otherwise it’s simply not worth doing at all. This might explain why 44 per cent have started a task only to leave it half-finished for prolonged period – because they realised part-way through they didn’t have the tools for the job.

Clive Richardson, Marketing Director at Draper Tools said: “Motivating yourself to get jobs done or finding the time to do them isn’t easy – especially when there are so many tasks on our to-do lists.

“The key is to focus on one thing at a time and gradually chip away at your to-do lists otherwise the mounting number of DIY jobs can become overwhelming. We find that with the right tools and a bit of determination to get the job done, these tasks don’t have to take over your life.”

The study also found seven in 10 ‘long’ to cross off DIY jobs from their to-do list – including bleeding radiators, repairing fencing and clearing out the shed. Other long outstanding tasks on the list were building flat pack furniture, fixing squeaky doors and tightening loose screws. Raking up leaves, changing fuses and boarding up the attic also remain incomplete for many of those polled.

It seems that Britain’s busy tradespeople are no better than the rest of the population either, with the average tradesperson having more than double the household repairs and home improvement jobs on their list than the rest of the UK. The research found that those who worked in a trade such as construction, plumbing or electrics had on average 18 DIY and maintenance jobs currently on their list to do at home. By comparison the average person had just eight.

For 59 per cent of the population crossing jobs off their list might take a while – they admit they have an ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ attitude towards home improvement.

In fact, a fifth avoid DIY at all costs and six in 10 simply do it out of necessity.

However, a further fifth described home improvement as something they really enjoy.

When it comes to ability, more than a third described themselves as ‘very good’ at DIY – although six in 10 said they are ‘not that good’ or ‘very bad’.

As a result, many of those polled rely on others for help and advice – with dad the first point of call for four in 10.

Further to this, those who rely on their fathers will go to them as often as four times a month.

But the Draper Tools study carried out through OnePoll found a quarter will also go to their mum for some pointers.

Clive Richardson, Marketing Director at Draper Tools continued: “There are a lot of ways to make jobs that little bit easier – and mum and dad can certainly help. There are also plenty of tools that will simplify and speed up many of the jobs on the nation’s list. What’s more, it’s incredibly rewarding when you do get the job done. In fact, three quarters of the population agreed that nothing beats the satisfaction of a getting a DIY job done – so finally tackling those neglected tasks can be very worthwhile indeed.”

Draper: Never Get Caught Out By A Flat Car Battery Again

If you haven’t driven your car for a while, or have only been making occasional short trips, you could find that your car won’t start the next time you need it. Draper Tools has launched a brand new range of Smart Chargers & Battery Maintainers to help solve this problem and stop you or your customers getting caught out by a flat car battery. The new range includes four different models that will extend the life of your battery. They’ll also activate, analyse and recondition your car battery, as well as being suitable for motorbikes, vans and caravans.

UK lockdowns have seen millions of us reducing and even completely stopping driving and this has led to an increase in flat battery breakdowns*. The situation is made worse in winter, as batteries can struggle in cold weather conditions. But there is a solution in the Draper 6V/12V Smart Charger & Battery Maintainer range (available in 2A, 4A, 6A and 10A options). These portable smart chargers will work with a range of 6V and 12V vehicle batteries and can be connected to a Lead-Acid or Lithium battery for a long duration without the risk of overcharging. This means you can simply leave them to charge overnight without worrying. Winter conditions aren’t a problem either, the Draper range of Smart Chargers & Battery Maintainers can all be used in temperatures as low as -20°C.

What sets this range apart from standard battery chargers is a special 10-step process that can analyse and repair your battery. The chargers can check the status of your battery and ensure it’s kept at 95-100%, with the voltage continually monitored.

And, what could really save the day, is how these chargers can even be used on deeply discharged batteries (aka a totally flat battery) – which can happen when you’ve left something on such as an internal light or headlights. By keeping a Draper Smart Charger & Battery Maintainer handy, you can totally avoid the need to jump start a flat battery with another vehicle. Thanks to the 10-step process, deeply discharged batteries are restored by repeated charging with small current pulses to rejuvenate battery capacity.

The Draper Smart Charger & Battery Maintainer are an easy to use and cost-effective solution to keep batteries in good condition all year round – especially in the current climate where many of us are using our cars less and less. With prices starting from £29.95 – they’re a must have for any car owner.

Draper's New Poll - Gardening Is Officially Cool Say Young People...

Think the typical gardening enthusiast is retirement age with a large outside space? Think again. Draper Tools has surveyed the nation’s young people to get their views on gardening and it’s clear gardening is enjoying a renaissance among 18 – 34 year olds.

Night clubs out, garden centres in

The Draper Tools poll of 2,000 young people found that gardening has enjoyed a surge in popularity among 18 to 34 year-olds during lockdown.  83% of young people now describe gardening as ‘cool’ and 54% would rather amble around a garden centre than dance the night away in a club. The appeal is rooted in mindfulness, with a desire to make their homes and gardens a nicer place to be, to improve mental health, and creating a space they can escape to. It also emerged that gardening is so popular that young adults spend close to two hours during a typical week taking care of their beloved plants.

Kev Smith, Head of Marketing at Draper Tools commented on the findings: “The popularity among young adults is fantastic to see, we knew it was popular, but even we were surprised by the outpouring of love for it. There’s a tendency to think of gardening as an activity for older people, but this study proves that gardening really is for everyone, whatever your age. Gardening is a very calming activity, as well as a rewarding one – everyone can enjoy the benefits it brings.”

Shopping for the garden

The study found the most popular houseplants among those polled are cacti, orchids, and aloe vera, followed by basil, spider plants and peace lilies. Outdoors, the most common are daffodils, roses, and lavender, along with tulips, mint and hydrangea. While the act of gardening itself is one of the biggest appeals – it appears to be more than that. Two thirds (66%) also said they love shopping for gardening items – whether that’s plants, seeds, or tools.

When it comes to tools and equipment, some the items most likely to be on the wish list are garden gloves, a hedge trimmer and pruning tools. To date, those polled have spent £318.56 on such items – with 58% revealing they’ve spent more on gardening during the past 12 months or so than ever before. In fact, 56% said gardening is one of the things which has kept them going in the wake of the pandemic. But this doesn’t mean their interest looks likely to shrivel-up like an unloved plant – 72% intend to keep on investing in plants, tools, equipment, and more to fulfil their vision for their garden.

Garden size doesn’t matter

Carried out through OnePoll, the study also found 60% wish they had access to more outside space than they do currently – so they could be even more green fingered. However, 78% believe you don’t need a big outdoor area to experience the benefits of gardening. The most popular place to grow plants is on the kitchen windowsill, while living rooms, bathrooms and balconies are also popular locations for all things green.

Kev Smith continued: “Gardening is incredibly accessible which might in part explain its increasing popularity. Wherever you live, whatever your space, anyone can give growing plants a go – and we’re seeing more and more people embracing this. The transformative effect of plants on areas big or small is just one of many great things about having plants in your home – both inside and out.”

Support for garden retailers
