They say start as you mean to carry on and if that is the case we are in for a very busy year ahead because January has been a big month.

January saw five new Troy suppliers join the platform

If that wasn’t enough the 2nd January saw the whole team come in with screwdrivers and allen keys at the ready to help us get set up in our new offices. Being based in the Troy offices up to now has been amazing but every young bird must fly the nest and our time has come, but we didn’t go far.

Moving into Exeter Science Park just down the road has given us the space to focus on the customer service we provide our clients, both suppliers and members, as well as putting in place plans for future growth and exhibitions like Troy Means Business, TMB on March 21.  We welcomed our first visitors on the 3rd January and we are looking forward to welcoming many more in the coming year, if you are in the area please feel free to drop in for a coffee.

Another BSIF Import & Export Course On 7th December - Members Don't Miss Out!

In response to the large member demand BSIF have arranged a second date for the training course on Import & Export essentials. This will be taking place on 7th December 2021, 10am – 3.30pm, please email BSIF team ( to register for you or a member of your staff.

Copies of the slides used on the course will be provided to each delegate as a workbook for future reference. The one-day course will take place online and a link will be sent upon registration.

The training course will be delivered by our partners from Strong and Herd Import and Export services. The cost of the training course is £85 +VAT per person. This price has been subsidised by BSIF for BSIF members.  Please register as soon as possible to ensure your participation.

‘Black Friday’, well-known as the retail event of the year, is almost here with traders already pushing out their fantastic offers to entice customers into both their physical and online stores.

This promotion can boost your business in a variety of ways…

Strategically discounting choice products can increase footfall and online presence tremendously and boost the prospect of secondary sales by raising awareness of other ranges that are stocked.  So advertise your Black Friday deals today and demonstrate that smaller, independent businesses can compete with larger chains!

Top Tips:

  • Be realistic about price, if it is ageing stock that will carry on sitting there taking up space, this might be the right time to drop the price and clear the products.
  • Drip feed details of the offers to encourage your customers to keep checking in
  • Extend your deals until the following Monday
  • Give plenty of notice and market your deals through all channels: online, e-bulletin, in-store
  • Offer flexible returns
  • Plan your offers in advance, but be prepared to make a change if something else looks a more popular deal.
  • Position offers in proximity to ranges that you’d like to push (both online & in-store)
  • Reward your loyal customers. Black Friday deals are for all customers, but is there a way you can look back and see if a customer shopped with you in the last year and give them a little something special? 
  • Train your staff to talk about the deals and build awareness well in advance.
  • Use a range of offers: ‘Get 40% off’, ‘Buy-1-get-1-free’ & ‘Free product with every purchase’

Finally Black Friday and the frenzy around it is not for everyone, and understanding the long-lasting impact of Black Friday is important to make a decision on if it is for you and your business. By participating in Black Friday your customers might hold off buying from your business as they wait for your substantial discounts which could harm cash flow, you could even stand out by refusing to get involved in Black Friday. 

Remember, you don’t need to offer a flat discount on all your stock, a few key products can make a huge difference to your sales. If you feel uncomfortable about the mass consumerism linked to Black Friday, you could consider associating your brand with a good cause and give a portion of the discount to charity.

Bidding A Fond Farewell To Philomena & Wishing Her A Happy Retirement Too ...

Philomena McDermott our Business Development Director, who covered the North East & West England, Scotland and Ireland, recently took early retirement to embark on a new phase of her life and enjoy some quality time with her family – sadly for us, left Troy at the end of the year.

Prior to her departure, she left a heart warming message, “I would like to say a big thank you to you all … I feel extremely lucky to have spent my last working years as part of the Troy family. The changes and growth have been remarkable and I shall watch on
as you trailblaze into 2022 and beyond.”

Phil joined us in August 2018 from Monks and Crane where she had been very successful. It was obvious to us from the interview process onwards we had someone very special in our team who could bring experience and insight plus a work ethic that was super productive through attention to detail and organisation. She has always been prepared to go the extra mile for members and suppliers and internally helped us shape our CRM system and also sat on our data governance panel.

Close Of Business Announcement For The Funeral Of Queen Elizabeth II

Following the sad news that Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral Castle on Thursday 8th September, the government has announced that next Monday, 19th September, will be a Bank Holiday to mark the State Funeral.

Out of respect for our late Monarch, the new King Charles III and all of the royal family, both Troy & Trojan Tools will be closed and resume business on Tuesday 20th September as normal.

TROY and Harrison & Clough Ltd (H&C) Working Together – New 60-day terms & Improved minimum order daily consignment.

Troy and its members are important customers to H&C, and we are very happy to be a trusted supplier of Fasteners and Fixings to the group, and therefore delighted to make the following announcement to all members:

  • Extended payment terms to 60days EOM, and Confirmation of our £55 daily consignment facility.
  • The improved payment terms are effective from 1st September 2022
  • H&C is unique in its application of its FREE DELIVERY terms.
  • H&C do not operate a minimum order value, but instead a minimum DAILY CONSIGNMENT VALUE.
  • The current minimum daily consignment threshold is a very reasonable £55. This means any Troy member can place as many orders as they please in a day, and if the cumulative total of all orders reaches £55 the consignment will be shipped FREE OF CHARGE.
  • Consignments below £55 will incur a “value for money” carriage charge of £4.95… its much easier to meet the value, especially if you consider our ranges of PTA & Tools when ordering your Fasteners and Fixings!

HSE Conduct Inspections of Fabricated Metal Businesses across GB

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has written to fabricated metal businesses across GB to check that they are managing the risks of welding fumes and metalworking fluids.

The Health and Safety Executive has written to fabrication metal businesses across Great Britain to check that they are managing the possible risks associated with welding fumes and metalworking fluids – this is aimed at minimising and managing the risks of respiratory diseases amongst workers.

The HSE are planning to visit all the main metal fabrication businesses between May and September 2021 to ensure compliance of the 2019 Weld Fume Reclassification.

So, what can you do to prepare for these inspections? 

Before the fabricated metal inspections takes place, HSE will provide you access to various resources to help manage potential risks and help business owners prepare for an inspection. These campaigns provide you with information on health risks related to wielding fumes which can cause cancer and metalworking fluids which can lead to occupational asthma.

Important Lockdown Message For Troy Members


We would like to address the recent Government Announcement which confirmed England’s return to lockdown this week due to a further wave of COVID19.
Despite many business sectors once again having to deal with disruption and hardship, we are pleased and relieved that Construction and Manufacturing are to remain in operation as essential services.
At the time of writing there are no suppliers that we know of that have closed so continuity is assured unlike last March.
Product categories such as PPE and DIY were particularly successful during the previous lockdown plus click and collect e-commerce services so we believe this as an opportunity for members to profit as well as supporting industry to keep moving.
We therefore have a better understanding of the challenges ahead, we know what to expect and are not facing the unknown –  we as always are here to help you.  All areas of Troy will remain fully operational, as it did through the first wave of COVID, and is here to support you once again #strongertogether.
Our colleagues at Ashford’s, a national provider of legal, professional and regulatory services, are on hand once again to provide legal advice should Troy Members require it, so please email Helen Bosley on at Troy for access to this facility.

The technology is called a ‘dashboard’ – this is a first sneak peak of something we are very excited about and we will be working closely with the Troy membership to understand requirements as ultimately these will be your dashboards so we very much value your input.

This is very much the start not the end of member dashboard development, meaning we wont be rolling this out automatically, we ask members to work with your Troy BDMs to request access to your dashboard and develop your dashboard together. 

What is a dashboard?

A dashboard is a series of visuals such a bar chart or a pie chart – The Member Dashboard is there to help you see your spend, products, invoices, list of suppliers you purchase from, and further purchasing insights. It can further help you with seeing the value of your purchases and the quantities of your product purchases. It’s going to be a great asset to your business operations..
