#SupportIndependents - Spotlight on Miles Tool & Machinery Centre

We went out on the road to catch up with Troy Member of five years, Award-Winning Miles Tool & Machinery Centre (MTMV), in Yeovil, Somerset. Owner Michael Miles and his son Tom Miles shared some highlights of their journey over the years, and how their family business provides tooling solutions and great service for their customers….

How do you provide your customers with outstanding service that goes the extra mile?

The business was started by my [Michaels] father back in 1970 and we are well known and established in the local community. We have an extensive range of products with a vast depth of stock and we pride ourselves as having extensive in-house product knowledge.
We have a fantastic onsite workshop where branded tools can be repaired – we are warranty and recommended repairers for several kajor suppliers including DeWALT, Makita, Metabo and Flex. If a local tradesman snaps off the drill bit in a chuck whilst in the middle of a job, they can pop into us and get it repaired on the spot.”

Why do customers choose to return to you?

“We have friendly and knowledgeable staff, which make you feel welcome when you enter the store. My [Michael’s] wife Sarah and children, Tom, Josie, and Davina all work for the business, along with a local team which has been with the company for many years – with some employees over 20 years service! We make a real effort to obtain products or accessories a customer is looking for, our customers have been coming here for years and we have watched their children and grandchildren grow into adults and come to Miles Tools for their merchandise too.”

How do you market yourselves?

“We promote via Google and social media (Facebook and Instagram) and have even recently posted on TikTok, We also product posters to advertise promotions and products and use local advertising for up to a 50 mile radius. We also have an annual show that is held in September each year at our site in Yeovil. That said many customers say they were recommended to us by existing customers – so word of mouth is also really effective”

Do you trade online?

“We have had an online site for 17 years which has been great for business. That said, we feel it’s vital to have a trade counter for customers to visit and have face to face conversations where we can provide full advice and support, this also enables customers to purchase appropriate accessories.”

Troy Members are UK family businesses, built up over generations, with proud histories offering unrivalled levels of customer service and instore technical product knowledge with access to over 400 suppliers and over 2000 brands – providing quality merchandise, at great value all from a local and trusted trader.

Keen to get the message out, Troy will be highlighting the benefits in buying from a Troy Member; being competitive on price, giving a professional tool shop experience and offering first class, after sales support from a familiar and friendly face.  It will be pushing the flexible approach to sales, that only an independent can offer, their wealth of local knowledge, and a mutual ethos of supporting other independent businesses in their communities too – which is vital for keeping the UK’s local economies growing.

#supportindependents - Spotlight on United Fixings & Teknofix

With the easing of restrictions around the UK, we recently got out on the road to visit one of our members United Fixings & Teknofix. With the spotlight on United Fixings & Teknofix it was great to meet their extended team, and have a chance to sit down and discuss what they offer their customers and how Troy supports them to reach their goals.

How long have you been a member of Troy?

United Fixings will have been members for 8 years in November 2021. We then added Teknofix as a member, purchased as part of the United Fixings Group. We completed the purchase just the day before the first national Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020!

teknofix team

What is most important for your customers as an independent industrial tooling distributor?

It’s really important for us to know that our customers will be receiving the very best products from us. Being a Troy member enables us to have access to a wealth of reputable high-quality suppliers – this gives us peace of mind that our customers will receive both the customer service we pride ourselves on, and the very best equipment the industry can offer.

teknofix josh and steve

How do you provide your customers with outstanding service that goes the extra mile? What are you really good at?

Without sounding cliché there really is no job too big or too small. We have a diverse range of customers whose requirements vary greatly – we feel we are able to provide great product knowledge on equipment across a number of different trades, giving each client the expertise they need to make the right purchase, the first time! Troy helps us achieve this by having such a variety of members in differing industries that we can call upon. Our locations, Tiverton and less than 1 mile from Junction 30 on the M5 makes us extremely convenient for travelling tradesmen in a jam, not just locals. We pride ourselves on being there for those who need us promptly and efficiently.

Why do you think your loyal customers choose to return to you?

At our heart, we are a family run business, and that isn’t lost on the people that walk through our doors. We are able to create a community within our client base, a welcoming atmosphere in store and ensure that we are able to nurture individual relationships with our customers with a laugh and a joke. People appreciate being appreciated, and we make a conscious effort to ensure that our customers know how much their ongoing loyalty means to us. Our customers return to us because they know they will get the care and attention offered by an independent supplier, with the comfort of knowing that we are supported by the biggest hitters in the industry as Troy members.

united fixings & teknofix christine

How do you best market yourselves to existing/new customers?

We have implemented a number of strategies over the years. I believe it’s a credit to us that we have grown as a business mainly through word of mouth, trade exhibitions and open days. This demonstrates to us that we are ‘people people’, that once customers are open to using us they feel they can trust us to support their businesses. In recent years the importance of online presence has grown exponentially, and we always try to keep new and existing customers engaged online, mainly through social media and Email. Showing our public support for customers online does a great deal to grow loyalty and increase our brand presence. But we also use the platforms to show our personality, not to hard sell all the time, but to show we can have fun too! I think people relate to that and get to know the people behind the business.

united fixings & teknofix

How do you attract/entice new less knowledgeable customers/trades?

By being open about what we do, and not being elitist. We all started at zero, we’ve all been sent to the supply store of a tub of elbow grease, tin of tartan paint and a long ‘weight’ at one point. Our staff’s product knowledge is second to none and we try our best to create an atmosphere in store where we can help you find exactly what you need, no matter the job. We have also recently launched a new campaign to encourage apprentices and new starters into the trades – the ‘Kit Up Your Apprentice’ range of packages we have created makes it easy for those that are inexperienced to pickup the tools they need at the start of their journey. We know the tools they need more than they might, so it’s all done for them! We have had some great results with this, with Apprentices, Employers and Skill-Schools all purchasing in recent weeks.

As part of our ongoing #supportindependents campaign we will be visiting a member each month and aiming to find out more about them and see how we can grow together. If you are interested in being visited then please contact Julie Trower our Member Support Coordinator on julie.trower@troyuk.co.uk.

Troy CEO Announced as New Headline Sponsor of Exeter Chiefs

Troy CEO, Paul Kilbride, is delighted to announce Troy’s headline sponsor of Exeter Chiefs, taking over from long-term headliner, South West Communications Group, with the new 22/23 home & away men’s kits featuring the Troy brand, front and centre.

Tony Rowe OBE, CEO and Chief Executive of Exeter Rugby Club, said: “In what is an incredibly exciting time for the club, particularly around our new rebrand, we’re delighted to have Troy as our main shirt sponsors for both the home and away kits.

“Building on what has already been a hugely successful partnership in recent years, we believe both ourselves and Troy can hit new heights in terms of the reach this sponsorship agreement will bring. We look forward to helping each other secure our respective ambitions.”

Paul Kilbride, CEO of Troy commented: “Exeter Chiefs is a team close to my heart and my family and I are major fans. Becoming headline sponsor made sense, with the club’s ethics aligning with those that are integral to us at Troy – investing in home-grown talent, a passionate ‘can-do’ culture and positive mental attitude.  Most importantly we, at Troy, & the Chiefs recognise that we have impressive experts that specialise in the field as individuals, but when working together as a team – that’s how we win.

“I see our headline sponsorship as a real boost to Troy.  Being affiliated with such a successful local sports club that has been crowned as Premiership & European champions offers great brand awareness.”

Keira Park, Head of Marketing at Troy explains “We hope the sponsorship will deliver value to the entire Troy network with greater visibility and awareness of our mission to support Independent Distributors. As well as providing national visibility to Members who take up the Via Troy branding package.”

Troy provides a world class supply chain, business services and solutions for its membership, which is made up of independent SME industrial supplies and tooling distributors, to enable them to compete with the major national tooling chains. Advocates of supporting British industry and buying local, Troy’s strategy is to increase end-user/customer awareness nationally through sponsorship, Troy #SupportIndependents campaigns and an online Member locator.

Two years of business growth in Partnership with Troy - A reflection by the Workwear Gurus

As a thriving online retailer specialising in high-quality safety workwear, footwear, and PPE, Workwear Gurus has always been committed to delivering top-notch products and services to our diverse global clientele. Our membership with Troy, one of the UK’s leading organisations in the workwear, safety footwear, and PPE sectors, has significantly bolstered our mission and provided us with massive advantages.

One of the most immediate benefits we’ve experienced is gaining ready-made connections with new, top-tier workwear suppliers. Through Troy, we’ve had the privilege of adding esteemed brands like SnickersPortwest, and Scruffs to our portfolio. This expansion has not only diversified our offerings but also elevated our status in the market, allowing us to cater to a broader range of customer needs with high-quality products.

Our engagement with Troy has also facilitated introductions to key industries, further solidifying our position as industry leaders. For instance, our collaboration with Pulsar has notably enhanced our capability to supply specialized gear to the railway industry. This strategic expansion into niche markets has been instrumental in our growth and in meeting the specific needs of various sectors.

Moreover, our movement into different market areas, including high-quality and world-renowned names like Helly Hansen Workwear, has been a game-changer. This shift has not only broadened our customer base but also underscored our commitment to offering only the finest workwear options. By associating with world-famous brands, we’ve reinforced our promise of unmatched quality and reliability.

Our connection with many experts in areas of specialism, particularly in safety footwear, is another significant advantage. Brands like Rockfall and Buckbootz, known for their exceptional ranges, are now accessible through the Troy network. This access has allowed us to offer an even more comprehensive selection of safety footwear, addressing every possible need and preference of our customers.

Furthermore, the competitive pricing offered through Troy’s large buying network has been a crucial factor in enhancing our market competitiveness. This benefit has enabled us to offer great value to our customers without compromising on quality.

The connections and support provided by Troy’s account management team have been invaluable. They’ve taken the time to understand our business, helping us identify growth areas and strengthen weaker parts of our brand and product portfolio. Their insights and suggestions have been instrumental in our continued development and success.

Lastly, Troy’s support in navigating large or complicated tenders has been remarkable. Their team’s expertise in recommending leading suppliers for niche products has greatly assisted us in establishing fruitful supply relationships, further enhancing our capabilities and market presence.

Our decision to join Troy, recommended by one of our suppliers, has proven to be a pivotal moment in our journey. Several years into our membership, we are immensely grateful for the boost it has given to Workwear Gurus. Our collaboration with Troy has not only facilitated our growth but also solidified our reputation as a provider of high-quality workwear solutions.

Our association with Troy has been a transformative experience, driving our growth and reinforcing our commitment to excellence. We look forward to many more years of fruitful collaboration and mutual growth.

Troy Member Mackays have been working closely with The Repair Cafe.

The Repair Cafe originated over in Holland when a lady called Martine Postma was looking for a way to stop perfectly usable goods from being thrown into Landfill for want of a simple repair.  There are now over 1500 Repair Cafe’s worldwide and the idea is growing very fast in the UK, particularly around Cambridge.

Each Repair Cafe group is manned by volunteers who are very good at mending things. Their customers are people who need things mended and don’t want to damage the environment. The other benefit being that the events become a very effective social hub for a community.

Mackays and Troy Supplier Draper Tools have created 2 very large toolkits which are stored at East Road. Every time an event is organised by one of the 26 groups in Cambridge and surrounding area, one of the kits is loaned out to the group and then returned to us following the event.  This allows many more volunteers to give their time without having to lug tools and equipment to the event.

The Repair Cafe concept has now grown very effectively in the Cambridge area. For the concept to develop more they need to put more resources behind it so that eventually every village and community throughout the country can have one of their own.

Cambridge Carbon Footprint (who organise the Repair Cafe events) have been given a fabulous opportunity of gaining very significant ONE for ONE match funding based upon the amount they can raise in just ONE week. That week started at 12midday Friday 22nd April and ends at 12 midday Friday 29th April 2022

Their fundraising target is £10,000 in a week which will be double to £20,000.
